Dear PlayStation: we don’t want your awful live service games

Fairgame$ trailer

Fairgame$ – it does seem to be a multiplayer shooter (Picture: Sony)

Another reader is unimpressed by the PlayStation Showcase and thinks Sony’s obsession with live service games is playing into Xbox’s hands.

There was a Reader’s Feature last week that suggested that the recent PlayStation Showcase would end up being a pivotal moment for this generation consoles and beyond. It seemed to get a lot of negativity from some commentors but I found myself largely agreeing with it. If it had been mildly positive then perhaps it would’ve been fairly quickly forgotten but any other outcome and I think its influence will be felt for a long time.

The outcome we got was certainly an odd one. It was all slickly presented, in that typical Sony fashion, but despite dozens of games and a 1+ hour runtime it never managed to show anything of interest beyond a few of the indie games. The way it started was just bizarre, not with a big new reveal but some awful live service game about robbing a bank. Or at least I assume that’s what it was, they never actually said and I can only assume by the fact that everyone was moving about in teams of three that it’s a shooter of some kind.

Then after that was… another team-based shooter. Except this one was ripping off Starship Troopers in the most blatant way possible. And apparently it’s a sequel to a game I’ve never heard of. Whoever decided to put Helldivers 2 in as the second game of the show: I admire your optimism, but you’re a madman. After that it was all downhill and then you started to get that sinking feeling, when you realise this isn’t going to be the massive reveal event you were hoping for.

When they rushed through the VR games in five minutes, and didn’t manage to announce a single new Sony title, I realised things were going really badly. I also realised that they still hadn’t shown The Last Of Us multiplayer game. Then when Spider-Man 2 was introduced as the last game I realised that, for no sane reason I can think of, they weren’t going to.

Rumours afterwards say Sony were purposefully holding some games back but for what purpose? If they unveil them after Xbox’s event in June then they’re going to look desperate, conniving, and stupid. I don’t think they will though. At this point it’s clear that this drip feed of information is the new way forward for PlayStation… and it sucks.

The strangest thing is they’ve now given Microsoft almost two weeks to prepare something that will outclass them. So they’ll be even bigger idiots than Sony if they don’t try to one-up them. All they’d have to do is unveil one or two first party games – maybe Fable and Avowed – and they’d have done it, because the bar has been set that low.

Ever since Microsoft announced it was buying Activision Blizzard it seems to have turned Sony crazy. I don’t know how much of an influence that was on the showcase (is that why Sony was holding things back?) but to me it seems that Sony has lost the plot. In fact, they’re on the cusp of making such big mistakes they could lose the generation.

Remember when the Xbox 360 was so far ahead in its generation and then it started losing the plot and wasting time with Kinect and all that rubbish? And then PlayStation 3 sneaked up behind and beat it. I can see exactly the same thing happening with this gen and these stupid live service games.

Why is Sony suddenly obsessed with them? It’s never had any success with them before, that would explain why you’d go all in with them. Nobody has really. Ubisoft tried this exact plan already and it’s been a spectacular failure, that’s left them in their worst position for years and ripe for acquisition themselves.

Nothing Sony has been doing lately gives me any confidence that they know what they’re doing and while Microsoft are great at missing an open goal, they’re going to have to put in a lot of effort to mess this one up. I’ve got both consoles, so I’m not necessarily rooting for one side or the other, I just want both of them to stop being stupid and start putting out some good games again.

Do you remember when console manufacturers used to do that? Nintendo does but I think Microsoft, and particularly Sony, have forgotten.

Physical video games copies are a legacy that should never die

Video game shop shelves

An increasingly rare site

A reader muses on the move from analogue to digital gaming and hopes that there’s always a place for physical copies of video games.

I live in Birmingham, a thriving, multicultural metropolis where there is something for everyone.

It’s changed a lot over the years, shops and trends have come and gone but there is one shop here that’s stood the test of time and is still going strong today.

I won’t name it, but it is a vinyl record shop and if you ever had the good fortune to go in there, it feels more like a celebration of music and this wonderful medium it was presented on along with all the interesting sleeves the vinyl singles and albums came in.

Why am I telling you this?

Simple, music in my opinion was probably the most important art form of the last one hundred years and they found a great medium to showcase it on.

Games have had a slightly shorter life span than music but a far more accelerated one.

I think games, music and film have all followed a similar path in their respective art forms, as far as being accepted by the stubborn masses who have opposed it as a passing fad.

We’ve all been on the receiving end of it.

‘What are you listening to that for?’

‘Things where so much better in my day when they could really sing/act’.

There are still people today who claim not to be gamers because they don’t own a console, yet are glued to their device playing some Bejeweled clone on their commute into work.

The media have always liked to jump on it too. Whether it was claims that if you played a record backwards and got messages from the Devil himself or priests outside the movie theatres when the Exorcist premiered. Or the rather constipated looking bad guys in Night Trap influencing small children to do bad things.

It was all part of a huge, elaborate plan to turn you into the absolute hell raising terror you are right now, as you sit on the toilet reading a Reader’s Feature on the GameCentral website.

All three art forms have certainly been through the mill as far as bad press is concerned and all three have took it, reluctantly, on the chin. The quality stuff still stands the test of time today, though, as it always does.

Another thing they all have in common is all three have found a format they were comfortable with, then moved onto a digital disc format and now are inevitably heading towards an internet streaming-only model.

This isn’t a bad thing of course, it’s environmentally friendly, easily accessible, and probably cuts piracy down too.

There’s still something about looking at shelves full of games and picking up the boxes that just feels more in tune with me as a gamer though. I loved the way the artwork and screenshots tried to seduce you into parting with your hard-earned cash for them.

The smell of the manuals, remember them? Just seeing the game there, when you knew it wasn’t there the day before, got my heart racing and made me want to pick it up straight away.

The high streets definitely don’t have the same choice as far as gaming is concerned these days. So the call for it is definitely not what it once was but, hey, that’s progress for you.

Which brings me full circle to that staunch little record shop in Birmingham. I’m totally OK with a format-less future for gaming, it’s an inevitability after all, but I hope in some corner of my town, and everyone else’s, there will be a similar shop for gaming enthusiasts like me to go browse, pick up boxes, purchase, talk, and celebrate what is truly good about our beloved art form.

Tyler Herro savage clap back at Stan Van Gundy after insulting his fashion

During the Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, former coach and current analyst Stan Van Gundy jokingly roasted Tyler Herro for his poor sense of style, saying the team needs him back on the court because he has such bad fashion on the bench. Well, it appears Herro took that personally.

Take a look at this savagery. Via NBA Central:

Van Gundy loves to crack jokes. By the looks of it, Herro wasn’t totally serious with his clap back either considering the laughing emoji. But, that one will sting.

The 63-year-old coached for many years in the NBA, even spending time with the Heat in the early 2000s. His most recent head coaching gig came in 2020-21 with the New Orleans Pelicans, but he was fired. To say Van Gundy was “bad” on the sidelines is slightly inaccurate, though. After all, he took the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009 and also made the conference finals on two other occasions.

Clearly, Tyler Herro is just salty. The guard has been out since the first round after breaking his hand and has no clear timetable for return. There is a chance he returns for the Finals if the Heat make it though. Herro has begun some basketball activities, although he’s not shooting quite yet.

Miami will be looking to close out Boston on Saturday night after dropping back-to-back games. The series currently sits at 3-2 heading back to South Beach. Herro will be on the bench as always with a statement outfit, I’m sure.

The Beast strikes back on Cody Rhodes at Night of Champions

At Night of Champions, the WWE Universe was treated to the newest chapter of “The CodyVerse” and like any good trilogy – or at least like the original Star Wars trilogy – this chapter ended in defeat, with the hero’s camp wondering if he will ever be able to overcome the big, bad boss after suffering such a crucial blow.

The proceedings opened predictably enough, with Cody Rhodes quickly realizing that his titanium cast could be used as a weapon and using that information to good effect by whopping “The Beast Incarnate” repeatedly with the legal arm enhancer. Still, this wasn’t some magic pill that took away Lesnar’s power, as, in his opinion, he could still lock up “The American Nightmare” in a Kimura and grind his bones into dust.

In essence, this was the core thesis of the contest, with Rhodes using his cast and his craftiness to land Cross Rhodeses and Lesnar instead focusing on his submission game, with just one F5 thrown over the 10-minute match. Rhodes would get the upper hand, looked like he was going to secure a second-straight win over Lesnar, and then, like clockwork, he’d be sitting on the ring apron in agony, trying desperately to get the strength needed to get to the Night of Champions ropes.

This went on for much of the end back-half of the match until, after eating the aforementioned F5, Lesnar locked in the Kimura once more, and this time, Rhodes couldn’t get out of it, instead losing consciousness and taking the loss like Luke Skywalker, who also found himself defeated with one arm at the end of his second fight with the big bad.

Let’s hope SummerSlam provides the positive resolution fans desperately desire, as it’s hard to imagine this storyline getting many more wrinkles before it comes to an end.

Shayne Gostisbehere’s beautiful message to Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes fell short of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday night. And now many of the team’s upcoming free agents are left wondering what’s next as the summer approaches.

One of those pending free agents is defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere. The 30-year-old blueliner came over in a midseason trade with the Arizona Coyotes to help bring an offensive touch from the point.

Gostisbehere’s performance did leave a bit to be desired. However, the veteran played a reliable role for Carolina as they marched to the Eastern Conference Finals. Whether it’s enough to keep him in a Canes uniform remains to be seen.

Gostisbehere, to his credit, wants to remain with the team. He mentioned the difference between his time in Carolina with his time in Arizona at the beginning of the year in Friday’s exit interviews.

“I was talking to my wife and I said it felt like we’ve been here longer than we were in Arizona this year. We got close to some guys in a short period of time,” Gostisbehere told the media on Friday, via Hurricanes reporter Walt Ruff.

Prior to joining Carolina, Gostisbehere certainly played a major role for the Coyotes. He scored 10 goals and 31 points in an Arizona sweater. With Carolina, the 30-year-old scored three goals and 10 points in 23 games.

His performances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs didn’t make him a star, however. Gostisbehere scored no goals in 15 games. Furthermore, he recorded just three assists. In fact, he had no points in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Gostisbehere provides value as an offensive-minded defenseman. And in a weaker free-agent market this summer, a team certainly will come calling. Only time will tell if an alluring payday is enough to coax him out of Carolina.

Phillip Schofield dropped by talent agency amid ITV exit

Phillip Schofield has been dropped by his talent agency following his shock exit from This Morning.

After a lengthy stint on our screens, the 61-year-old departed his position on the ITV program – which he presented alongside close pal Holly Willoughby – last week.

He has since left ITV with ‘immediate effect’ after confirming that he had an ‘on-off’ affair with a younger colleague.

As well as this, he stepped down as host of the upcoming British Soap Awards, with a replacement yet to be announced.

Following his exit, it has now been announced that YMU has ‘parted company’ with Schofield after 35 years.

Mary Bekhait, the Group CEO of YMU Group, told Metro.co.uk in a statement: ‘Honesty and integrity are core values for YMU’s whole business, defining everything we do. Talent management is a relationship based entirely on trust.

‘This week, we have learned important new information about our client Phillip Schofield.

These facts contradicted what Phillip had previously told YMU, as well as the external advisors we had brought in to support him.

‘As a result, on Thursday we agreed to part company with Phillip, with immediate effect.’

Schofield told Metro.co.uk, via his lawyers, that he had ‘stepped down’ from being represented by the agency.

‘It is with the most profound regret that after 35 years of being faultlessly managed by YMU I have agreed to step down from their representation with immediate effect,’ he added.

The news comes just after Schofield admitted to having an affair with a much younger man who worked behind the scenes on This Morning.

The presenter had served as the face of the weekday program for more than 20 years and came out as gay on the ITV sofa in moving scenes in 2020.

He announced his exit from the program last week amid reports of ‘tensions’ with Willoughby.

‘I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning,’ he said at the time. ‘But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

‘Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind.

‘I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love. So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.

‘I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month.’

Phillip shared the news of the affair in a lengthy statement (Picture: ITV)

In a bombshell move earlier today, Schofield provided a lengthy statement to Daily Mail earlier today, in which he admitted to an affair with a younger colleague while he was still married to Stephanie Lowe, his wife of 30 years.

He said that he met the unnamed man when he was a teenager – and that things developed into ‘more than a friendship’ after they began working together.

The Cube host insisted that, while he lied about this to his bosses and other colleagues, their relationship was ‘unwise but not illegal’.

‘I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning,’ he said. ‘Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over.

There were reports of tension between Holly and Phil behind the scenes (Picture: ITV)

‘In an effort to protect my ex-colleague I haven’t been truthful about the relationship. But my recent, unrelated, departure from This Morning fueled speculation and raised questions which have been impacting him, so for his sake it is important for me to be honest now.

‘I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers at ITV, to my colleagues and friends, to my agents, to the media and therefore the public and most importantly of all to my family. I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.’

‘I have therefore decided to step down from the British Soap Awards, my last public commitment, and am resigning from ITV with immediate effect expressing my immense gratitude to them for all the amazing opportunities that they have given me,’ he added, vowing to keep his colleague’s identity under wraps.

‘I will reflect on my very bad judgement in both participating in the relationship and then lying about it.’

Beyoncé Pays Tribute to Tina Turner at ‘Renaissance’ Show in Paris – Rolling Stone

Beyoncé is honoring Tina Turner. During her tour stop in Paris’ Stade France on Friday, Beyoncé stopped her show to remember the legendary singer, who died earlier this week.

“I just want to take a second and honor Tina Turner,” she told the crowd. “If you’re a fan of mine, you’re a fan of Tina Turner. I wouldn’t be on this stage without Tina Turner, so I want you guys to just scream, so she can feel your love.”

“I feel so blessed that I was allowed to witness her brilliance,” Beyoncé added.

The message for Turner at her concert comes a few days after she shared a letter to the late legend on her website.

“My beloved queen. I love you endlessly,” Beyoncé wrote. “I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”

Celebrities such as Janelle Monáe, Mick Jagger, Naomi Campbell, and Mariah Carey also shared tributes to the singer following her death.

Beyoncé has long cited Turner as one of her main musical inspirations. Upon Turner’s death, the BeyHive resurfaced clips of Beyoncé speaking about Turner’s impact.

“When I was a kid and I saw her tapes, I wanted to be like her,” she says in it. The video dates back to the 2008 Grammy Awards, when Beyoncé and Turner collided on stage for a performance of “Proud Mary.” It begins by showing Beyoncé, then 26-years-old, skipping towards Turner in their first meeting. She embraces Tina Turner like an aunt she’s known all of her life.

Before that moment, Beyoncé spoke highly of Turner during the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors.

“I’ll never forget the first time I saw you perform,” Beyoncé said to her directly. “I never in my life saw a woman so powerful, so fearless, so fabulous — and those legs!”

Turner died on Wednesday at the age of 83 “after a long illness,” her family said in a statement on Wednesday. “With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” they said. A cause of death was not immediately available, though Turner had a stroke and battled both kidney failure and intestinal cancer in recent years.

Bey’s show in Paris also stands out as she was joined by her and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy on stage to perform “My Power.”

Listen to First Solo Single in a Year – Rolling Stone

“Bye” comes several weeks after Peso Pluma launched his own record label and announced his tour

Peso Pluma is over love on his new single “Bye.” On Friday, the singer released the poignant track, marking his first release without a featured artist in nearly a year since blowing up with “Ella Baila Sola,” his breakout song with Eslabón Armado.

Backed by the tololoche, Peso sings about “distracting himself with princesses” drinking wine to get rid of the feeling of loneliness. “The pain slowly disappeared/You and I, our story has ended,” he sings. “I know it was for the best of us two.”

Earlier this week, Peso teased the single on TikTok, sharing a video of himself lip-syncing the lyrics of the song as Mexican TV personality Dania Méndez — who’s set to be in the video for the song — is seen relaxing at the pool. (Méndez posted a video of herself writing the word “Bye” in the sand of a Dominican Republic beach while using Peso’s song in the background.)

Over the last few months, Peso Pluma has been on a rapid rise, dominating charts with collaborations like “La Bebé” with Yng Lvcas and “Ella Baila Sola.” He’s also collaborated with Eladio Carrión, Jasiel Nuñez, Junior H, Blessd, and Becky G. (He also joined the singer at Coachella to perform “Chanel.”)

Trending

The new single comes about a week after he added new dates to his previously announced Doble P Tou, and about a month after launching his label Doble P Records.

“It has always been a dream of mine — and the whole Peso Pluma family — to go on tour in the U.S. and I definitely didn’t expect it to happen so soon,” he told Rolling Stone“But I am looking forward to connecting with my fans in every city and getting to experience every moment of this with them.”
